Every organisation will have its own documentation for recording medication. This is often referred to as Medication Administration Record (MAR) Sheet.

It is important that you know and understand how to use your organisation’s recording protocols/policies and procedures. It is a legal requirement for care services to keep medication records where their care workers take responsibility for administering medicines to supported people.

Activity 2

Find a copy of your organisation’s medication recording documents. Look at this as though you were supporting someone for the first time. Does it give you all the information you need to be able to support them with their medication safely.

The MAR sheet contains all the information that you need about the medication and should match the information on the prescription label. It is also used to keep track of the amount of each medication held, when it was received and when it was administered. This must be used in conjunction with the person’s care plan.

The Care Inspectorate has published a guide to using documentation in the safe administration of medication called ‘Guidance about medication personal plans, review, monitoring and record keeping in residential care services’ (2012).
