What happens next ...

You arranged for Ruth to attend dementia awareness sessions delivered by a national charity. When she returns from this, she asks to speak to you about what she learned, and about a meeting that she has had with her placement co-ordinator.

Please play the video and decide what to do next, choosing one of the three options below.

What's your next step?

Option 1: You tell Ruth that you acknowledge how she is feeling and you don’t want her to feel uncomfortable. You reassure Ruth that she will continue to always have another worker present when supporting George. You also offer to meet her more regularly to provide support throughout the rest of her placement.

Option 2: You set aside time with Ruth to explore the support that she needs to enable her to work with George and you discuss this with her placement co-ordinator. You record your discussions and an action plan for Ruth and inform your manager what has been happening.

Option 3: You acknowledge Ruth’s view and explain to her that your service has a duty to provide care to all residents, so workers cannot choose or refuse to work with anyone receiving support. Therefore, she will have to continue supporting George regardless of her personal feelings.
