Child observation simulator: toddlers

Scenario #3 – Analyse: You might have mentioned...

Read the text below for our analysis of what happened. Is there anything that you missed or did you pick up on something not mentioned?

Shona’s role-play appears to be an activity she has been involved in or has observed recently, what is she focusing on in her play? Is it the role of the adult who was moving the logs with her? Her comment “watch your fingers” perhaps indicates that she was a helper at home moving the logs and she is making sense of the situation by role-playing it. Is she interested in the significance of the logs? At her age, this might be the first time she has been aware of, and participated in, this activity and she has sensed its importance for her parents.

It might be that Shona is displaying a transportation schema – moving things from one place to another – this might be why this activity, from everything else that she did at home, is the focus of her play.

Categorising - although it was only one item, Shona noted that it didn’t belong with the rest of the blocks and this caught her attention enough to single it out and move it.

Shona’s ability to stay focused and achieve what she set out to do. Shona’s use of language appropriate to the situation and also the word ‘favourite’, has she used that before?
