Child observation simulator: toddlers

Scenario #2 – Analyse: You might have mentioned...

Read the text below for our analysis of what happened. Is there anything that you missed or did you pick up on something not mentioned?

Jack is very focused and absorbed in his play, you could say he was in a world of his own and this is a deep level of play for a two-year-old. Because he spends quite a bit of time in train area and has used all the track pieces in his play, it’s easy for Jack to see this space and the train track as his domain.

Danny is passing by, the trains, laid out ready to play with, have attracted him and he settles down to enjoy moving the train along the track.

Jack is enraged that his play has been interrupted and his main aim is to stop Danny as quickly as possible. In this heightened state of frustration, Jack has no sense of right or wrong or other people’s feelings, just his own feelings and he grabs and bites Danny. Danny is understandably shocked. The attack came from nowhere and he looks around for an adult to sort this out for him. Jack, still focusing on his play has achieved his objective - to stop Danny by disrupting his play - and goes about re-organising the train track with no apparent concern for Danny.
