Josh too might be feeling insecure at this time which is why he still has his comforter in his mouth.Josh’s crying when Rebekah cries harder is further evidence that he is feeling vulnerable and it doesn’t take much for these feelings to surface. He is reacting to a noise that makes him feel uncomfortable. The children appear to be in that twilight time between sleep and activity.

Josh’s reaction to Rebekah’s distress could be interpreted as showing empathy. However, at this age it is more likely that he is simply reacting to her distress by giving her something that makes him feel better.

Rebekah might need a bit more time when she wakes up to get used to her surroundings and be ready to sit on her own and play.
