Child observation simulator: babies

Scenario #2 – Analyse: You might have mentioned...

Read the text below for our analysis of what happened. Is there anything that you missed or did you pick up on something not mentioned?

Noah appears to be particularly interested in objects that make a noise.

He is using all his senses to explore the objects in the treasure basket.

He is very involved in exploring the objects in the treasure basket and is giving it his full attention.

Noah is operating within Piaget’s Sensorimotor stage during which infants and toddlers acquire knowledge through sensory experiences and manipulating objects. This is why treasure baskets are ideal for babies and infants.

The object that makes a sound particularly attracts Noah and he is drawing on what he already knows to make it make a sound. He knows that shaking things makes a noise. He is testing what he knows by applying the same actions on another object. During this, Noah has assimilated what he knows to the new object. When this doesn’t work, eg when the spoon doesn’t make a noise, he accommodates that not everything makes a noise when you shake it.
