Ava is already in role-play mode as she sits at the table stirring with the spoon in the bowl. Perhaps she is exploring what it is like to be the person who prepares food? Her role play feeding Alix is likely to be what her mother (or other significant adult) does when feeding her or a sibling; opening her own mouth wide as she offers the spoon and making a ‘mum mum mum’ chomping sound/action when the food is accepted from the spoon. Ava’s eye-hand coordination when scooping out the food and offering it to Alix’s lips is very good.

Alix is drawing on what she knows and understands and each time the spoon is offered to her, she appears to expect something to eat and doesn’t quite understand Ava’s game. Nevertheless she is clearly enjoying Ava’s attention, the repetition of words and action and Ava’s giggles and smiles. Alix shows her enjoyment and desire to repeat the game in her response to Ava’s question ‘gain?’ by bouncing and waving her arms.
