Overflow preventing plugThis is a device that sits in the plug hole of a bath or sink. It prevents flooding by detecting the level of the water by its pressure. The plug then opens to release water down the plug hole to ensure that it does not flood.
Bath liftsBath lifts enable you to be lowered into a bath and raised again if you are not able to step into the bath.
They can be expensive and are not suitable for all bathrooms, so you must seek a professional assessment before buying or installing one.
Environmental controlThese are systems that enable people with mobility issues to control their environment without needing to move. They include smart thermostats, window openers and lighting controls.
iPad / TabletiPads and tablets can be used in many ways to support people. They enable people to use video to keep in touch with loved ones; can be used for entertainment; and can enable voice control.
iPads and most other tablets have accessibility settings that enable people to make it easier to use for people with additional needs.
Smart digital assistantsSmart digital assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa enable you to use voice control for many activities. This includes making phone calls, playing music, ordering shopping online and even controlling electrical equipment around your home.
Community AlarmThis is a system that uses telephone landlines to provide you with a way of getting help and support. You usually have a wireless button on your wrist or around your neck which you can press to summon help.
Other types of sensors can detect when you have fallen or have opened a door.
Door entry systemThis enables you to control who comes into your home. Many sytems now use cameras so you can see who is at the door.
Door entry systems can also use wifi so you can use an app on a mobile device to control it.

Wifi routerThis creates a wireless network in your home that enables you top connect many different devices from computers to smart TVs.
Increasingly, many other household appliances can be connected and controlled using wifi. You may have heard this referred to as the ‘Internet of things’ (IOT).
On the right, you can see the layout of a flat. We have added some examples of technology that can be used to support vulnerable people or those with additional living needs. These are indicated by the blue symbols.
We have included some 'off the shelf' devices that can commonly be found in homes and some devices that need to be fitted by specialists.
Motion sensorsThese detect movement in a room and can be used to switch on lights to reduce the risk of trips and falls.
Motion sensors can also be used to alert carers that a person is moving around and trigger personalise messages to reassure the person in case they have become disorientated.
Health monitorHealth monitors enable you to keep track of things like blood pressure and blood-sugar levels. Some systems even enable you to send the results to your GP or clinic remotely, meaning fewer trips in person.
