Outcomes for children

Case study - Eric

Eric is two and attends the early years setting where you are his key worker. Eric has recently been diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy. He has developmental language delay and walks with a slight limp. At times Eric becomes frustrated when people don't understand him and this can result in him being unwilling to talk to other children and staff members. Staff members often observe Eric standing quietly in a corner, watching other children play. Eric has two older sisters. His parents work full-time. Eric's mother is concerned about his speech delay. She has told her health visitor that she becomes frustrated with Eric when she does not understand what he is trying to tell her. Due to his recent diagnosis, a number of agencies now need to work together to help Eric and his family. With the parents' agreement these targeted interventions are coordinated in a single agency child's plan, managed by the health visitor.
