Where are the girls? Both boys and girls can be interested in and engage in this kind of play. Most of the superhero figures on film and in comics have traditionally been male but today there are many female superheroes too.

What do you think about children playing as superheroes?

The rough and tumble aspect of their play is very physical and allows the children to explore how they use their bodies and judge risks. Trust is also an important aspect of this type of play where pretend fighting is involved.

In superhero play the children can explore issues such as fear, excitement and distress. The children also move in and out of role, for example, when two children suddenly become dogs, perhaps prompted by being on all fours tumble play or when one of the boys makes soup for dinner.
