1. Observing Izzy

Watch the video and then click the button to read the description.

Izzy is 28-months-old and has been attending the centre for the past two months.

It’s the end of the session and Izzy is in the cloakroom area with her mum. There is a lot of noise coming from the cloakroom and clearly Izzy does not want to go home. Izzy’s mum tries to persuade Izzy to change into her outdoor clothes and entices her with promises of what they will do when they leave.

Izzy is sobbing and responding to each of her mum’s comments negatively with ‘I don’t want to’ Izzy’s mum appears to be reaching the end of her tether, she gathers Izzy and her clothes up and carries her out the door still sobbing and crying ‘I don’t want to!’

Children often don’t want to leave nursery and can sometimes find it hard to transition between one place and another, especially when they having a good time or they are tired. What might you do to prepare Izzy for going home, could you work with the parents to develop a strategy that would help Izzy and her mum? For example preparing Izzy in advance would let her to know that mum is on her way; try to avoid quick changes in activity. Give Izzy some warning about any change of activity coming up. For example, ‘Izzy, you have five more minutes to play. Then it will be time to go home’, be ready to get her coat on.
