Making better decisions

Day care services for children

You are a supervisor in a day care service for children. Heather, one of the early years workers comes to you for advice about something that one of the children, Daniel, said to her.

Please play the video then decide what you should do next by choosing one of the options below.

What's your next step?

Option 1: You ask Heather to record exactly what Daniel said and to sensitively explore if he has any other worries. You also speak to Daniel’s mum to enquire about the circumstances at home. Once you have done this, you share all the information with your manager and ensure this is recorded.

Option 2: You advise Heather to observe Daniel and to let you know if he says anything else. You tell her to speak to the other workers and ask them to tell her if Daniel says anything or acts in a way that concerns them.

Option 3: You have a good relationship with Daniel’s mother, Tracey, so you decide to have a chat with her about his comments when she comes to collect him later that day.
