Safer recruitment

You are the manager of a busy service. You have a number of staff who are not working due to sickness and annual leave which makes it very difficult for your service to provide the standard of care that your organisation expects.

You have a new employee, Mary who is due to start work on Monday but you have not received a copy of her PVG scheme record. You have heard from another manager that there seem to be delays in PVG records being processed.

You get a telephone message from Doug, a human resources worker at your main office. Listen to Doug’s message and decide what you should do next. Please choose one of the three options below.

What's your next step?

Option 1: Mary has assured you she has no convictions so you allow her to start anyway as you are so short staffed.

Option 2: You contact Mary to inform her that she cannot start work until you have received her PVG record.

Option 3: She assures you she has no convictions and you allow her to start and buddy her up with a colleague. You tell Mary that she must not work unsupervised until you receive a copy of her PVG record.
