Play in supporting child development

Self-evaluation

The importance of play is in Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) which states every child has the right to play and to recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child, and to participate freely in play.

The GIRFEC approach has been built up from the UNCRC.

Activity 9

Providing choices for children is a fundamental aspect of early learning and childcare. In order to provide children with a number of choices, the practitioner must understand the importance of choices, and support the child with a variety of different types of play and activities. This approach to learning is child-centred. It can help make a child feel included and in control. Having a range of interesting and engaging options that allow children to initiate, explore, create and experiment ensures that their experiences are meaningful and satisfying.
